Code QH629999

Large, predatory waterbugs with raptorial forelegs, without a terminal respiratory siphon (cf. Nepidae) but with a pair of short, retractile respiratory appendages on the terminal segment. Adults of the giant waterbugs, genus Lethocerus (Letherocerinae), reach lengths of 50-70 mm and are the largest Australian Heteroptera. In the smaller Diplonychus (Belostomatinae), eggs are laid onto the back of the male, where they are brooded.

Belostomatidae might readily be confused with Naucoridae, but the latter are much smaller (to 11mm long) and lack discernible venation on the forewing membrane.

Any member of the Belostomatidae can give a painful bite.
