Backswimmers, rather similar to Notonectidae but smaller (under 4mm long), without macroscopic swimming hairs on the hind tibiae, with a punctate or reticulate pattern on the pronotum and having the forewing membrane either vestigial or absent.

Pleidae are frequently abundant in the tropical north in swamps and lakes, and often are attracted to light.
