Larval Dolichopodidae closely resemble Empididae (see previous taxon) in external appearance. However a seemingly valuable character to separate the larvae of Dolichopodidae from the very closely related Empididae, and the similar but less closely related Athericidae, is the spatulate posterior end of the distinctive metathoracic rods. Usually this feature can be seen without slide preparation, but a 'temporary' slide mount enahnces visibility.

The Dolichopodidae is one of the larger families of flies, but the larvae are remarkably poorly known. Amongst the wide range of larval habitats utilised, some aquatic, including saline, are included. Probably the most common larval biotopes are mud and the hygropetric zone.
