PELECORHYNCHIDAE

Code QD209999

This small family was once considered to be part of the Tabanidae (horse flies). The Australian representatives provided the basis for separate status. Pelecorhynchid larvae have smooth bodies tapering at each end, with somewhat bead-like segments. This shape, combined with the lack of prolegs, therefore makes them resemble worms. The head is completely retractile into the thorax and the respiratory system of the Australian genus is amphipneustic.

The few larvae that are known were found in damp soil and marshy areas alongside streams. They are thought to be predatory. Little is known of the immature stages of this family in Australia.
