The larvae have been described by Miller (1939).

Biology

Ptilonesia auronotata occurs predominately along the seashore in isolated colonies, where it probably breeds in decaying seaweed (Norris, see Dear 1985). Adults have also been recorded inside houses and on horse dung. The species is at greatest abundance during the New Zealand autumn (Miller 1939).

Distribution

The species has been recorded from coastal New South Wales and Victoria and is also common in New Zealand.
