Locating the clypeal margin

The anterior margin of the head is the clypeal margin. The shape of this margin varies between species (Fig. 1 and Fig. 2). The head must be viewed from above - if tilted the shape changes as the clypeal margins are variably raised above the centre of the clypeus.

Character states

Three shapes are recognised here:

  1. Notch absent, apical margin either rounded, truncate or shallowly concave (Fig. 3A)

  2. Notch present, shallowly to moderately developed, inner angle approximately 90-110 degrees (Fig. 3B)

  3. Notch present, deep, inner angle less than 90 degrees (Fig. 3C)
