Perennial forb to 1.5m tall. Leaves basal, with a sheath at the base, 20-80cm long, 4-25mm wide, flat, hairless, green to glaucous. Flowers with 6 white to blue 'petals', in open groups at the tops of the flowering stems. Fruit blue. Family Phormiaceae in NSW. Family Liliaceae in SA.

Differs from Dianella porracea in that the leaves are green or mildly glaucous, the leaf blades become narrower towards the basal part where the edges are fused together, and the leaf sheaths are green to purplish.

Differs from Dianella revoluta in that the anthers are yellow, and the leaf edges are flat.
