Gabbia kessneri Ponder, 2003

Diagnostic features

Differs from all other Australian species, other than G. beecheyi, in its large, greenish, smooth, shining, ovate shell with convex spire. Gabbia kessneri however differs from G. beecheyi, in its somewhat larger size, and an aperture that is more rounded anteriorly.

Type locality: Heathers Lagoons, west of Adelaide River township, Northern Territory.

Biology and ecology

This species occurs in billabongs and other large semi-permanent water bodies, mainly on submerged macrophytes.

Distribution

Western side of Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. Additionally, one sample lot from Melville Island is only tentatively attributed to this species.
