Circular spot lesions after a period of storage, dried and sunken and cracked from the centre out (C. Clark, APS).

Diagnostic summary

  • What you see on plants

- on storage roots at harvest, shallow round lesions of soft wet texture with well-defined margin, generally 1-2 cm in diameter.

 

- in storage, lesions usually do not grow, but dry up, and may crack open or peel away from the root.

 

- storage root shape is not deformed by the lesion.

 

- affected roots have a bitter flavour.

  • Favours hot wet weather conditions.
