Damage on storage roots (N. Smit).

Diagnostic summary

  • What they do to plants

    - larvae feed under the soil surface, and  gouge shallow channels on the enlarging storage roots. When extensively damaged, storage root flesh turns dark-greenish just under the grooves.

    - adult weevils feed on the foliage.

  • Larvae cause greater damage than adults.

  • Has only been reported to occur in Africa but is suspected to occur in the Philippines.

  • Constraint only in some, relatively dry, agroecological zones.
