Liriomyza meracula resembles L. caulophaga but is generally smaller. Positive identification will require examination of male genitalia (Spencer 1977). The genitalia of L. meracula are of a form different to all other Liriomyza species in Australia but is very similar to L. virgo (Zetterstedt) which is found in northern Europe and Alaska feeding on Equisetum (Spencer 1977).
