Diatom Identification Key for South African Rivers

Diatoms of South African Rivers home pageA key to the common and some endemic species of diatoms occurring in South African rivers. Use of the key may be constrained by the absence of endemic species from the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal provinces.

This key arose as a component of six years of work by the authors to re-instate the use of diatoms for aquatic biomonitoring in South Africa. It contains information on 70 genera and 286 species, covering both the most common taxa, whilst also including key endemics.
